A ferocious storm packing torrential rain and hail tore through India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, leaving a trail of destruction that killed more than 100 people and injured dozens more, officials confirmed on Thursday. The sudden weather disaster, which struck on Wednesday, prompted a swift government response as authorities scrambled to assess the damage and deliver emergency aid to shattered communities.
The state relief commissioner’s office reported that at least 104 people perished across roughly a dozen districts. The region surrounding the Hindu pilgrimage city of Prayagraj suffered the heaviest casualties. Beyond the human toll, the storm injured 59 people, damaged 87 homes, and killed 114 livestock, underscoring the widespread impact on the agrarian state.
A Sudden Blackout and Flying Debris
Witnesses described terrifying scenes as the storm descended without warning, plunging areas into darkness and turning everyday objects into deadly projectiles. “The entire area where we live turned black for around half an hour,” said Ashok Rai, a resident of the coal-rich industrial town of Obra in Sonbhadra district. “Strong winds lifted hoardings and signboards and thick coal dust from the ground and hurled them around.”
Television footage captured the aftermath of nature’s fury: massive uprooted trees lying across roads, heavy billboards crumpled onto vehicles, and roadside stalls reduced to splinters. In one dramatic video clip aired by broadcasters, a man was seen ripped from a tin structure he was desperately clinging to and thrown into the air by a powerful gust in Bareilly district. He survived the ordeal with injuries.
State relief officials attributed many of the deaths to falling trees and collapsing walls. Such pre-monsoon storms, known locally as “andhi,” are a common feature of the northern plains during the hot season from March to June, but the scale of this week’s devastation was exceptional.
Government Orders Immediate Relief
In response to the crisis, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose Bharatiya Janata Party also governs the nation, directed officials to ensure that survivors receive immediate assistance. Authorities stated that financial aid must be distributed to affected families within 24 hours, signaling a high-priority relief operation across the battered state.
The disaster highlights the vulnerability of India’s heartland to extreme weather events, which experts say are increasing in intensity due to climate change, often catching populations off guard despite seasonal warnings.
